What is Source by Webflow, and what changes?

Source by Webflow explained: code as the source of truth, AI agents and a visual canvas on the same site, when you can use it, and what it means for yours.

Source by Webflow is a new Webflow platform where marketing teams and AI agents work on the same website, with the site’s code as the source of truth. Agents change the real code, the visual canvas edits that same code, and it can connect to an existing codebase, CMS and hosting, including sites already built in Webflow. Webflow announced it on 2 September 2026. On 21 October 2026 it’s in a limited research preview, with no release date or pricing published, and Webflow says today’s platform isn’t going anywhere.

We build both kinds of site Source is trying to bring together: most of our client sites are on Webflow, and our own site is built as code with Astro. Here’s what Source is, and what we think it changes, from running both.

What Source by Webflow is

  • Code as the foundation. Today, the Webflow Designer edits Webflow’s own description of your site, which Webflow then compiles into the HTML, CSS and JavaScript that ships. In Source, the code is the site: agents work on it directly, and every visual edit writes to the same code (Webflow).
  • Agents and a visual canvas together. Ask an agent for a multi-step change, like rolling out a new card style across every page that uses it, then make finishing touches by hand on the canvas. A comment left on the canvas can become a task for an agent.
  • Views for each role. Marketers, designers and developers each get a workspace shaped around their job, such as a CMS view, a campaigns view or a custom dashboard.
  • Your stack, or Webflow’s. Source connects to an existing codebase, CMS, hosting and marketing tools, or uses Webflow’s own, including its next-gen headless CMS.
  • Governance built in. Brand systems, roles, approval paths and audit trails apply to agents the same way they apply to people. Teams decide what an agent can ship on its own and what needs sign-off.

Quick to set up, or quick to change

The trade-off we weigh on every project is setup against iteration. Webflow is quick to set up and slower to change in bulk. A site built as code is the opposite.

Webflow is ready on day one. Hosting, the CMS and its editor, forms, the sitemap, redirects and SSL come with the plan, and the marketing team can edit pages from launch. Endeavour Lotteries’ marketers build campaign pages from about 20 components. A bigger change, like a new kind of section or a restyle across many pages, is careful work in the Designer, or through Webflow’s MCP server for teams already using agents.

Code takes longer to set up. Our own site went from first commit to launch in five days, from finished designs, but we built things Webflow includes as standard: an API route that sends enquiries through Resend, 13 redirects in configuration, the sitemap, structured data, analytics and booking. There’s no visual editor: our posts and pages live as files in the code.

Then code is fast to change. In the 15 days after our launch on 7 October 2026, we made 467 commits to the live site, almost all written by an AI agent and checked on a preview before going live. On 21 October alone there were 30: a draggable row of work on our healthcare page, a comparison table built, restyled and then removed, and new covers on 13 journal posts. Each change builds in about 30 seconds.

Source is Webflow’s attempt to give you both: Webflow’s setup, editor and guardrails on top of code that agents can change as quickly as ours.

When you can use it

Webflow is enrolling select agency partners and customers in phases “over the coming months”, and you can apply for the research preview at webflow.com/source. There’s no general release date or pricing yet.

Existing sites keep working. Webflow says it will keep investing in the current platform, including its MCP server, AI Code Components and AEO agents, and that when Source is ready there’ll be a supported path for teams who choose to move. Agents are already common on today’s platform: more than 30% of Webflow’s enterprise customers run agents against their live sites through its MCP server, roughly four times as many as in January 2026 (Webflow).

What it means for your site

  • If you’re on Webflow now, nothing changes yet. Keep building, and build well: a site made from reusable components with structured CMS content is easier for agents to work with today and simpler to bring across later. See Can marketers use Webflow without developers?
  • If your site is built as code, Source could give your marketing team what code sites usually lack: a visual editor and guardrails, without rebuilding. Webflow says developers can connect a codebase with no migration, and an agency quoted in its launch post builds for clients on Next.js and Astro.
  • If you’re choosing a platform now, don’t wait for Source. Choose for who edits the site and how often it changes, because both routes have a path into it. Webflow vs Astro and Webflow vs Next.js compare them, and how to build a website with Claude shows how we built ours as code.

Questions we get asked

What is Source by Webflow?

Source by Webflow is a platform where marketing teams and AI agents build and run a website together, with the site’s code as the source of truth. Agents change the code, the visual canvas edits the same code, and it connects to an existing codebase and tools. Webflow announced it on 2 September 2026.

When is Source by Webflow coming out?

Webflow hasn’t published a release date. On 21 October 2026, Source is in a limited research preview, and Webflow is enrolling select agency partners and customers in phases over the coming months. You can apply for the preview at webflow.com/source.

Will my Webflow site stop working?

No. Webflow says the current platform isn’t going anywhere and that it will keep investing in it. When Source is ready, teams that choose to move will get a supported migration path, so there’s no need to rebuild or wait.

Can Source work with Astro or Next.js?

Webflow says Source connects to an existing codebase, CMS, hosting and marketing tools, and an agency quoted at launch builds for clients on Next.js and Astro. Webflow hasn’t published a list of supported frameworks yet.

How much will Source by Webflow cost?

Webflow hasn’t announced pricing for Source. Today’s Webflow plans are unchanged: see Webflow pricing: which plan you need.

Should we wait for Source before building a new site?

No. Source has no release date, existing Webflow sites will have a path into it, and Source connects to sites built as code. Choose the platform that suits who edits your site and how often it changes, and build it from reusable components.
